Europe's Disillusion with the Status Quo
Although the political mess of Brexit was reaching one of its many false summits in the summer of 2019, there were many other symptoms of the democratic malaise evident on the continent. Our route took us into Spain to understand the imbalances of the capitalism-democracy nexus, onto Italy to grasp how populism takes hold and then into Hungary to see how susceptible democracy is to a nationalistic capture from within. Finally, Athens offered a stark comparison between our contemporary systems and the ancient ideals of democracy.
